Caroline Bruzelius
Caroline Bruzelius works on buildings and cities, especially in medieval Italy and France. She has published on major monuments in France (the abbey church of St.-Denis, Notre Dame in Paris) as well as in Italy, especially Naples in the 13th and 14th centuries. Her recent work focuses on the architecture of the mendicant friars (the Franciscans and Dominicans in particular) as well as on their impact on urban space. She has also published on the architecture of women religious. In 1991 she published a catalogue of the Brummer Collection of Medieval Sculpture at Duke, a study that she is now revisiting in collaboration with Mark Olson in order to restore an interpretation of their original context by creating 3D models. She has been awarded numerous grants and prizes, including a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
