Calvin Hui

Calvin Hui is a doctoral student in the Graduate Programme in Literature at Duke. He is currently writing his dissertation, "The People’s Republic of Capitalism: The Making of the New Middle Class in Post-Socialist China, 1978-2008." As an interdisciplinary scholar, he is interested in critical and cultural theories, particularly cultural Marxism, cinema and media studies, gender and sexuality studies, postcolonial and ethnic studies, and critical Chinese humanities. During his study at Duke, he has taught five undergraduate courses relating to modern Chinese humanities. His forthcoming courses are: "Brand New China" (Literature) (summer 2012), "Fashion, Media, Consumption" (Women's Studies) (fall 2012), and "The Chinese Middle Class and its Culture" (Asian and Middle Eastern Studies) (fall 2012).
