Katherine Jentleson

Katherine Jentleson is a second-year doctoral student in the Art, Art History and Visual Studies Department at Duke University. After earning her B.A. in Comparative Literature from Cornell University in 2006, she spent several years working in the publishing industry at such magazines as Harper's, Art+Auction and Modern Painters.

Her research interests include the Primitivist visual strategies of artists like George Catlin and Marsden Hartley, the role of American folk art in Modernist circles in the interwar years, and the institutional history of self-taught art in the United States. Her last conference paper, delivered at Yale University’s 8th Annual American Art History Graduate Symposium, discussed the unstable legacy of William Edmondson, a sculptor who was the first African American to have a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
